It would be nice for surfers to take part in community efforts to help reduce waste on beaches. Spending an hour or two on the beach to clean can be such a big help.

Sunscreen and other cosmetics have chemicals that can harm the ocean and damage marine life. Surfers must be aware of which brands and products are potentially harmful to go for better alternatives. Choose environment-friendly surfing equipment

Many surfboards in the market are made of multiple materials like plastic, fiberglass, and wood manufactured in factories. Include packaging and shipping, a lot of energy is used to make these boards. Surfers must be sure about the kind of boards they want to own to reduce waste. Surfing and traveling have an affinity that fans of both adore. The sport improves a surfer’s balance, stability, and focus, while traveling allows a person to explore endless possibilities or take a break from a busy lifestyle in the city. Anouk Govil.

Choosing the right surfing destination is essential for a fun and safe time on the waters. The Outer Banks islands’ Kitty Hawk is known for being the destination where the Wright Brothers took their first successful flight. The crowds don’t make the pier’s breaks any less wonderful. Kitty Hawk is definitely one of the best surfing spots in the East Coast. South Padre Island, Texas is the Lone Star State’s finest bet for some swells. Surf etiquette: Practicing the basics

Anouk Govil. Surfing is a great activity, especially for those who love the beach. But aside from learning the skills, one must also be aware of surfing etiquette, especially when catching waves on a crowded beach. Here are some of the things surfers of all levels should remember:

Respect the right of way

The person closest to the peak has the right of way. When paddling and waiting for a wave, those beside or behind the surfer should give way as it can be very dangerous to compete for the same wave. However, in the case of a split peak, surfers must take opposite directions. Shouting out “left” or “right” is important when this happens. Anouk Govil.

Avoid the drop in

Now that a surfer has understood the right of way, they must also understand what a drop in means. This happens when someone catches a wave that a person is already riding. Doing this is not just rude; it is also dangerous. It can block a person’s path and might ruin the order of catching waves for surfers. Anouk Govil.

Don’t snake

Paddling around another surfer to get the right of way is also disrespectful. Remember that the right of way is given to the one closest to the wave. Paddling in front of that person can distract the person in line and others who are waiting to ride their waves.

Keep the board close

Anouk Govil. Sometimes the waves are so intimidating that one’s instinct is to abandon their board. This is another hazard that might actually injure another surfer. Before hitting the waves, be sure to master the duck dive and the Eskimo roll to go back to shore with the board safely.

Surfing, on its own, is a full-blast workout. Much like any sport, surfing requires hours of training before a person jumps from beginner to intermediate. Individuals who desire to pursue surfing would find themselves creating a workout plan to improve their strength, stability, and flexibility on water.

It’s not every day a person gets to go to the beach to practice their surfing skills. Gym workouts are the best alternatives to hours of training at the beach. Squats are incredibly helpful in building strength and stability without the need for any gym equipment. The core is the foundation of their body, making it incredibly important to build its strength. Planking develops core muscles, improving strength and flexibility necessary for surfing. Start doing the workout technique for 30 seconds that increase time accordingly. Push-ups, another classic technique, engages the whole body. Proper hip movement is essential to surfing. Lunges help one learn correct hip movements without restrictions. Over time, one can increase the difficulty level of the workout by doing other variations and incorporating weights. If possible, practice swimming before heading to surf trips. Swimming and paddling share movements that improve shoulder strength and build back and arm muscles. But for those who are serious about learning, getting a good trainer is a must. This will allow a student to keep track of their progress and to improve their form.

What to do when you can’t do surfing right

Learning how to surf doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a hobby that takes time to master. But what if it’s already taking long months and years? You’re having fun, and yet surfing doesn’t seem to return the favor and show that you’ve amassed an “acceptable” level of skill at it? Junior scientist and water sports enthusiast Anouk Govil lists some fun things to consider doing if you seem to suck at surfing.

Work on your fitness
Sometimes, it’s a question of not being fit enough instead of not being able enough. Maximize your time in the water by being fit enough to try to catch enough waves. Build up your stamina and focus on being stronger to tackle the waves. You can even do this outside the water and integrate more exercises into your usual routine.

Make sure you’re paddling right
A common mistake among beginners, you might be paddling from your elbows or the inside of your arm isn’t brushing the board. You might also notice that your neck hurts while you lie on the board, and that’s because you should be using your lower back to lift your body.

Find your silver lining
Well, just have a splash hanging out with the wave instead of hacking or destroying it, says Anouk Govil. Why don’t you make friends with it and just enjoy the good life that surfing offers? It’s not hard to look for the good side of things as well: you’re relaxed, not in a stressful competition mode, and just enjoying the perks that you get from being out on the ocean.

Surfing in Southeast Asia: Where to go

My name is Anouk Govil, and I’ve been to a number of places around the world since I love surfing, kayaking, and all types of water sports. And when people ask me about my favorite spots, I normally say they’re all my favorites. However, if I were to recommend a region in the world for the truly adventurous, it would Southeast Asia.

The water conditions in Southeast Asia are great for all kinds of surfers and the cities in the area aren’t bad cultural promenades.

So, without further ado, here are some of the best surf spots in Southeast Asia.

Bang Tao, Thailand

Thailand isn’t known for surf spots. It has a few, with Bang Tao Beach being one of them. The wind direction is immaculate, as is the break. Surfers come here because the waves are as safe and as basic as one can get, allowing for optimum freedom on the board.

Nam O Point, Vietnam

Nam O Point in Vietnam though, offers a much greater challenge than Bang Tao. The breaks push surfers to the left, and that’s just for starters. What really gets surfers’ blood pumping are the rip tides, which are considered dangerous. Definitely not the place for noobs.

Bamboo Island, Cambodia

There is a place called Bamboo Island in Cambodia, which I Anouk Govil, truly love. It’s as close to paradise as I’ve ever seen. If you’re a laid back surfer who loves to ride the waves as much as you love a good backdrop, this is your place.

Get into surfing shape with these workout routines

My name’s Anouk Govil, and I’ve been an active member of the surfing scene for a little over a decade now. There’s just something about riding the clear blue waves that takes my breath away. But like every worthwhile endeavor, a bit of preparation is needed to ensure a relatively safe, easy, and enjoyable experience.

For this article, I want to share the exercise routines I do to get in shape for surfing. Here they are.

Lower body

Squats and lunges have always been a part of my workout routine. I’ve found it especially effective when surfing. Before I worked out my legs, I would usually cramp after an hour of surfing. It ruined my experience. Nowadays, I never skip leg day in the gym. It also helps me swim, of course.

Core

The core is comprised of the ab and lower back muscles. While most of our movements make use of the core, it is especially relied on in surfing, what with all the turning and twisting that has to be made. Core exercises include sit-ups, crunches, deadlifts, and side crunches. Planking is also a good idea.

Arms

Since you’ll be paddling and lifting yourself onto the board multiple times during a surf session, make sure your arms and shoulders are strong enough. Lift some weights to help your biceps. Perform push-ups for your triceps. And do overall shoulder routines for mobility.
